HEALTHCARE ACCESS

Where the hospitals are, what each area relies on, and the honest tradeoffs of healthcare across the water.

St. Michael Medical Center — Silverdale

Kitsap's full-service regional hospital — 24-hour ER, surgery, a Level III trauma center, and the St. Michael Cancer Center. The hub most of the peninsula relies on, central to Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Port Orchard.

Tacoma's medical district

MultiCare Tacoma General (Level II trauma), St. Joseph Medical Center (Level II trauma, largest South Sound birth center), and Mary Bridge Children's anchor the South Sound — the major systems for Gig Harbor, Puyallup, and Pierce County.

St. Anthony Hospital — Gig Harbor

A full-service hospital right on the Gig Harbor peninsula — emergency, surgery, and cancer care — so South Kitsap and Gig Harbor families don't have to cross the bridge for an emergency.

Mason Health — Shelton

Mason County's community hospital (Mason General) and clinics serve Shelton, Belfair, and the Hood Canal communities. The nearest full ER for much of rural Mason County.

Seattle's world-class care — a ferry away

UW Medicine, Swedish, Virginia Mason, Seattle Children's, and Fred Hutch put top-tier specialty and cancer care within reach — a ferry-and-drive, not a quick trip, so factor it in for serious conditions.

Military & veterans

Naval Hospital Bremerton, Madigan Army Medical Center at JBLM, and VA Puget Sound serve the region's large active-duty and veteran community.

The honest tradeoff

In and around Silverdale, Bremerton, and Tacoma you're close to full hospitals. The farther out you go — rural Hood Canal, west Kitsap, the islands — the longer the drive to an ER, and the ferry can complicate reaching Seattle's specialists in an emergency. For most people it's a non-issue; if you manage a serious condition, it's worth mapping before you choose a town.
